Linux as a market

Parent article: The Linux Kernel's Fuzzy Future (InformationWeek)

In many ways the Linux kernel more resembles a market, with many internal
vendors competing, than a product in the traditional sense. This article
seems not to have understood this yet. You cannot describe one road map
for a market. Who would have the authority to create one? That doesn't
mean there aren't any; each vendor probably has one for their respective
product. This should be welcome news for journalists who can highlight
general directions.

Linux as a market

Hmm... That's a unique but interesting metaphor.

Of course, sticking with that metaphor, the reason it hasn't been done yet
is that anyone sufficiently competent at market prediction to predict a
complex market like that three years out, isn't likely to stick around
writing Linux market update reports... <g> They'll be too busy trying to
figure out how to spend the billions they've made on the stock market. <g>
