The kernel as released on kernel.org could look a lot different from a kernel installed from a distribution, too. It was hard to predict that Red Hat would release a 2.4 kernel with 2.6 features incorporated. And I'm not criticizing them for doing that, just saying it muddies predictions.

One of the core ideas behind the current development model was to minimize the divergence between the mainline kernel and what the distributors ship. Getting features into the mainline reduces the temptation to backport them to older kernels.
