Scalix Joins Open Source Development Labs
Leader in Linux email and calendaring to participate in Lab's Data Center and
Desktop Linux working groups
BEAVERTON, Ore. and SAN MATEO, CA November 22, 2004 The Open Source
Development Labs (OSDL), a global consortium dedicated to accelerating the
adoption of Linux in the enterprise, today announced that Scalix Corporation,
provider of the industry's most powerful Linux email and calendaring
platform, has joined OSDL and will participate in the Lab's Data Center Linux
and Desktop Linux working groups.
Scalix's Linux email server supports shared calendaring and advanced email
features, delivering desktop-grade productivity to users running Outlook
and/or popular browsers such as Mozilla, Firefox and Internet Explorer.
Scalix's messaging server can run side-by-side with both mainstream
proprietary systems, such as Microsoft Exchange, and open source
applications, bridging the two worlds and integrating with a company's
existing IT infrastructure.
"Email has always played an important role in helping drive the adoption of
new platforms, making it an important 'killer app' for Linux," said Julie
Hanna Farris, founder and chief strategy officer of Scalix. "We believe the
experience and expertise we have gained deploying Scalix in complex
enterprise environments will benefit the work of the Lab's Data Center and
Desktop Linux working groups. We look forward to working with OSDL and to
helping them lead the adoption of Linux in the enterprise."
Technology market research firm The Radicati Group, predicts that the market
share for Linux-based messaging will increase by 75 percent between 2004 and
2008. Over the same period, the firm predicts that that market share for
Microsoft Exchange will increase by only 6 percent.
"We welcome the work of ISVs such as Scalix that are delivering critical
solutions like email and calendaring to customers who want to run their
business on Linux," said Stuart Cohen, CEO of OSDL. "The rise of Linux as the
fastest-growing enterprise OS is partially due to strong commercial ISV
support and innovation from Lab members such as Scalix."
