Gentoo is proud to present the world with Gentoo Linux 2004.3!

This is the final release of 2004 and is the culmination of the work of
each of our developers. The main focus for this release was fixing bugs
in previous releases and making the release tools more robust and easier
to use. Releasing for 2004.3 are amd64, hppa, ppc, sparc, x86 and also
our initial ppc64 release. There is also an experimental alpha release,
along with stages for ia64 and s390. The embedded team has also
released stages for arm, mips, ppc, and x86, all which can be found
under /experimental. You can find out more about 2004.3 by checking out
the release page [1] or reading the ChangeLog [2].
Some points of interest include both amd64 and ppc switching to gcc 3.4 as
their compiler of choice, sparc releasing only sparc64 media, amd64 and x86
switching to a single kernel for the LiveCD, and improved cooperation between
the various arch teams to have a more consistent release.

The Release Engineering project would like to thank all of the Gentoo
developers and our many community testers for making this release our
best ever and we're all looking forward to bringing you an awesome
2005.0!

Just my luck! I just installed Gentoo 2004.2 yesterday as it was the latest stable at that moment. :e

Well, I don't see it (I finished sync'ing about 15 minutes ago...
(11-16-04_12:15:00 AM EST)). I've
been doing just as you suggest for a couple years now...

(I'm looking for default-x86-2004.3, not default-x86-2004.2)

Actually, use the cascading profile

We've switched over to cascading profiles to make administration easier.

default-linux/x86/2004.3 is what you want. You'll need >=.51 portage to make it work.

Question as I try Gentoo out for the first time

Anybody know why GCC 3.3 is still the default on x86 and how best to install from stage1 with 3.4.3 instead?

You'll need to change your default profile when you finish unpacking your stage1 and syncing your portage tree. To do this, delete /etc/make.profile (its a symlink) and then recreate it linking against /usr/portage/profiles/gcc34-x86-2004.3/

Also keep in mind there are still a few things that don't properly compile with gcc-3.4 (openoffice is the big one) so you'll need to also have gcc-3.3 installed and use the gcc-config utility to switch between your compilers.

Oops, a couple of corrections:
1) The profile you want is gcc34-x86-2004.2 not gcc34-x86-2004.3(doesn't exist yet.

2) You'll need to add the lines sys-devel/gcc ~x86 and sys-libs/libstdc++v3 ~x86 to your /etc/portage/package.keywords

I understand the default kernel is 2.4. Am I correct? Does anybody know
why?
