Empower Technologies Unveils PowerPlay 1x

Fun Linux toy of the week: Empower Technologies has sent out a press release proclaiming the forthcoming availability of the "PowerPlay 1x" PDA. It is a dual-processor, Linux-based system with a color display, built-in MP3/MP4 player, and a cellular phone option. Availability is in December, for about $199.

Extract from the Linux source on the linuxda.com website:
LinuxDA.kernel/linux/Makefile:

VERSION = 2
PATCHLEVEL = 0
SUBLEVEL = 40
UCRELEASE = 0

ARCH = m68knommu

BOARD = pilot

So apparently tao efforts are not in vain.

The press release says it has an ARM, so this image must be for last year's gadget that has a Dragonball in it.

Ah thanks, but it is the only linux kernel source tree I can
found on the linuxda.com website they advertise.

Why on earth would a PDA need dual processors?

It's not SMP, it's just a chip with two things you could realistically
call processors on it: an ARM9 (running Linux in this case) and a DSP.
Calling it dual processor probably gives is a bit misleading since
the first thing most people are likely to think of is two of the same
processor.

If that's a `dual processor' then the UP machine next to me has at least seven processors in it.

(*grumblegrumble* bloody marketroids rendering another good term useless *grumble*)

Indeed, most mobile phones are at least 'dual processor' by this terminology, and some are 'quad' or more. I agree the marking use is confusing but we do need a term for this sort of architecture, which is getting increasingly common (one CPU to manage things and several special-purpose CPUs to the radio/camera/codec etc).

Has anyone found more info?

I certainly can't find pictures, specifications, or even any mention of the 1x model on their website. It talks only about the model Vs, a year-old (but quite tasty for a Handspring Visor fan) version.

Google can't find anything about ``powerplay 1x'', either. I'd love to see a few photos.

Has anyone found more info?

I hope they've gotten better. A few years back, I bought one of their products and it took like 3 months to get and was compatible with nothing.

Needless to say, I was very unhappy.
