O'ReillyNet looks at
one way to secure a wireless connection. "Wireless is
practically wide open for anyone with a laptop, a wireless card, and the
appropriate set of tools. WEP is defeatable. MAC addresses are sniffable
and spoofable. In short, you need the next level: IPsec."

IPSec is a complex standard and sometimes interoperability between different IPSec stack is difficult to handle.
OpenVPN (http://openvpn.sf.net/) is an excellent alternative to IPSec and there is a client/server for all the classical free operating system but also the Windows proprietary operating system. If you are planning to secure a wireless network, think about it. You can make an easy mixture between ChilliSpot (http://www.chillispot.org/) and OpenVPN.... give you an excellent and useable security for protecting wireless network.
