Not in general they weren't.

If you take any large enough group of people you can find a few individuals who are/were hypocritical and maybe even disgraceful, but that doesn't implicate the entire group. Saying Puritans are a hypocritical, disgraceful lot is like saying Muslims are all terrorists, or Windows users are all idiots.

You better check up on the revisionist history you've been reading. ;-)
