Ballmer: We'll outsmart open source (ZDNet)

ZDNet is carrying Microsoft president Steve Ballmer's latest comments about Linux. "'Linux is not about free software, it is about community,' he said. 'It's not like Novell, it isn't going to run out of money--it started off bankrupt, in a way.'"

Ballmer: We'll outsmart open source (ZDNet)

I just wonder if Ballmer or Gates have ever really done any volunteer work? Do they have any concept of how the real world gets things done? Sure we all must get paid for our profession, but anything new, innovative, with significant impact on society happens with sweat equity. Am I wrong that Gates never graduated from college?

Kind of an amusing comment. First, last time I checked Novell had about a billion USD (10e9) on hand, so they haven't quite run out of money yet.

Second, what killed Novell was neither a better (more innovative?) product or competition - it was Microsoft including undocumented, Novell-breaking API changes in every W95 / Office 97 service pack. Since Microsoft controlled the desktop they eventually made it too painful to support the Netware client.

Finally, how is Active Directory doing in the marketplace these days? Funny how the trade press stopped discussing AD market share about 18 months ago.

Ballmer should open his eyes

It is also quite funny that Balm think that he can rely on the network of all MS professionnal and certified partners for adding value to its products. I'm nearly MCSE (still one exam to take, but I'm kind of reluctant) and thank to these certification I can more efficiently tell customers that MS products are just good to loose time and money.
I know some of their products quite well, and I still have to loose a lot of time on them to make them work more or less "normally" even in a full microsoft environment. This of course is bad both for us (we earn less money because we loose time solving problems which should never exist) and for the customers who get less efficient results than expected.
So I'm waiting that most people open their eyes and start using better products. That would allow me to do a better and more satisfying job, and that would allow customers to have globally better and more efficient architecture on their network. Failing to do that for merre marketing and buzz-words reasons would mean the loss of so much intellectual energy in the world that I can not imagine anybody would want that to happen.
