Sharp to ship world's first HDD-based PDA (Register)

The Register looks at the new Linux-based Zaurus SL-C3000 PDA from Sharp. "The new model is based on a 416MHz Intel XScale PXA270 processor backed by 64MB of SDRAM and 16MB of Flash ROM. Crucially, the unit also features a 4GB hard drive - the first PDA to do so. The Sl-C3000 sports a 3.7in 640 x 480 LCD mounted above a QWERTY keypad with a five-way navigator control." The device is only available in Japan.

damn. this is gonna cost me some $$. weird that the article doesn't make a big deal of the 640x480 res, since I think Sharp is still the only one that does this. Now if they can just straighten out their relationship with the development community....

To be precise, 216 dpi (if The Register's 3.7" is to be believed: 800 dots diagonal / 3.7 inches). Much more than the LIBRIe's 170 dpi, even if it is not so readable.

Where you were this year ? Asus MyPal A730, HP iPAQ hx4700, Toshiba e800, few SONY models - they all have 640x480 VGA screen and are all in stores already. This used to be Zaurus selling point. Not anymore.

I'd love to see the modplug stuff working on that platform. I could get an awful lot of mods into a hard-disk that size.

Send some to Europe

Just *ship it in Europe* please, please!! I swear a lot of people would buy these things, if only Sharp didn't seem to want it to fail from the outset. It's very strange to produce a nifty product and then to make it virtually impossible to acquire for the majority of the world....

*sigh*. Still no wi-fi built in.

I know, I know. Good to be able to change and all, but my 802.11b card has been with me almost five years and it still works perfectly. I except it to be with us for a long time. (And I hate those protruding cards, it's too clumsy.)

And since Sharp has announced

That they're dropping the Zaurus in the US entirely, we likely won't ever see it first hand. <sigh>
