Wikipedia is your friend: Sod, a pejorative term, probably an abbreviation for sodomite.Actually, "Sod off!" is pretty mild in British english, and I doubt many people who use it think about the homophobic etymology. I guess about halfway along the continuum between "¡Vete al diablo!" and "¡Chinga tu madre!" in Mexican spanish.
