I can relate to this. I help to administrate a development box running and old version of Red Hat (7.2). The current version of the fileutils package (even the updated one provided by the Fedora Legacy Project) includes a bug in the 'install' program that brakes the '-C' option. Having to break out the source RPM, rework my patch, create a new RPM, and then update the system with each update is a major pain in the neck. (Yes, I've submitted it to the maintainer of the package, but I was ignored.)

It sounds like Conary would support the maintenance of my outside patch across upgrades automagically! That would be fantastic!

Actually, Debian has had something like this for a time, in multiple implementations I believe - dpatch and dbs. Neither is part of dpkg proper, because that's Debian culture, even the packaging subsystem is a highly (too highly?) distributed effort.
