Just to note that dpkg use ucf : "Update Configuration File: preserves user changes ..." for some times.

I have not tried conary and i beg it manages changes better than ucf . In fact i really miss an article on this problem : "configuration file" managment upon upgrade.
Most package managment benchmark stay at the dependency level. What about configuration, sum controls, gpg signing ?
