Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler LLP 1133 Avenue of the Americas (at 44th Street) 24th Floor New York, New York 10036 212.336.2000 Email: info@pbwt.com Website: www.pbwt.com Patterson Belknap is a New York City-based law firm with significant experience providing intellectual property counseling and litigation services. Attorneys at Patterson Belknap are quite experienced and involved with Open Source software legal issues. Besides counseling clients on these issues, Patterson Belknap attorneys have also published articles and made presentations on the subject. Moderated by a Patterson Belknap attorney, the panel will include: Scott Handy, Director Worldwide Linux Solutions, IBM Scott is responsible for enabling solutions for Linux that use IBM DB2, WebSphere, Lotus and Tivoli software. He is also responsible for Open Source strategy and sits on IBM's Open Source Steering Committee. Scott started with IBM in December 1983 as a systems engineer and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from UC Berkeley. Spiro Maroulis, Engagement Manager, RedHat Red Hat is the leader in development, deployment, and management of Linux and Open Source solutions for Internet infrastructure, ranging from embedded devices to secure Web servers. The foundation of Red Hat's business model, Open Source, represents a fundamental shift in how software is created. Because the code is available to anyone and because developers who use the software are free to improve it, the result is rapid innovation. Red Hat solutions combine Red Hat Linux, developer and embedded technologies, training, management services, and technical support. Red Hat's customers include Credit Suisse First Boston, Kenwood, DreamWorks, Greenpeace and the New Jersey State Police. Robert Lefkowitz, Director, Merrill Lynch Merrill is one of many Wall Street brokerages doing a largescale Linux deployment in an effort to cut their costs and boost revenue. Indeed, one of the big benefits that Merrill sees is that they can write an application once and then deploy it with minimal work on mainframes, mini-computers, desktops, laptops and handhelds-whether it be on Intel hardware or something else. This contrasts with the expensive and time consuming Unix approach where developers write software for every version of Unix, including for tools and patches. If it works out the way they hope, Merrill could be savings tens of millions of dollars annually within three to five years. Jim Gleason, VA Software and Founder and President of The New York Linux Users Group. Jim co-founded Electric Lichen LLC, which was acquired by VA Software in 1999 and is perhaps best known for its efforts helping IBM, Informix, and numerous Linux distribution vendors launch their Linux strategies. Jim is also the Founder and President of the New York Linux User's Group (NYLUG.org) which supports all things Linux and Open Source in the greater New York area.
