SCO's McBride warns of open source 'wild west' (NW Fusion)

Darl McBride rides again: Network World Fusion reports from a talk he gave in Cannes. "As he fights a prolonged legal battle on several fronts, McBride has positioned himself as a de facto champion of IP protection amid growing threats from free, open source development. 'SCO's market share has dropped from 40% to 10%. ... We are under attack from what I call 'hurricane Linux,'' McBride said. However, he praised companies that have commercialized Linux, such as Red Hat."

Massive chuckling ensues... so Darl's going to start his own Groklaw, huh? That should be quite amusing.

It always amazes me that people that give lip service to the worship of the free market never actually want to let that market do its job. Of course, the icecutters' union probably had the same view when refrigerators came on the scene...

Of course, they'll need to name the SCO version of the Groklaw site "SCOfflaw".

Impeccable call, that man! (-:

Turns out it will be "prosco.net". Due to show up in November, sometime...unless they file for a delay on that, too, of course.

;-)

I was hoping for "Away From It All", you know, afia.sco.com, with the motto "When you know you want more, but don't look where to go".

Hey Darl? Leave us (Red Hat) out of this. We're not your friend.

That's the most amusing quote. Remember when McBride said his problem was
with companies like Red Hat trying to make money from "their" "IP" and not
with end users?

The latest spin from Sun (and now SCO?) seems to be that Red Hat is just another proprietary vendor because they (horrors!) charge money.

Well,

in my opinion the questions remains what Mr. McBride _really_ is: A mormon
or a moron...

Best regards,
Dirk

Nothing that says he can't be both, but I don't think the Provo Linux User's Group or the Brigham Young University Unix User's Group like to claim him. I seem to recall they staged a protest outside of SCO's Lindon offices a few years back.

Or both? ;)

No doubt that website SCO is going to launch soon (of that really is true), will provide hours and hours of fun reading :)

...if they can manage to keep it running, since they seem to be prone to "hacker attacks" (aka tripping over the power cable, etc.) :-)

Sorry, but as a Florida resident I can state, unequivocally, that the letter "L" has already been used during this year's hurricane season -- Hurricane Lisa never touched the US mainland; rather, it strayed into the mid-North Atlantic, where it bothered vessels in the commercial shipping lanes.

I am so sick of this line of BS from bozos like McBribe. If you're going to steal IP, the place to hide it is in proprietary software, where no one else can inspect the code.

Since he is so concerned about protecting IP, he should be out lobbying for some sort of "sunshine law" for proprietary software.

Lock up your women and children, the McBride clan's hit the likker again! They're shooting holes in things down Main Street way - mostly their own feet, sadly not their own heads but hardly for want of trying.

SCO's market share has dropped from 40% to 10%

10% of what market share? Did he ever clarify exactly what he was talking about? Or is he deliberately being obscure, hoping people might think this means that they had, or even have, a larger market share than, say, Apple?

In case anyone's wondering, this is a rhetorical question…
