Updated ESS modem driver for 2.4.x kernels

Hi
I have hacked around a build problem that prevented building the driver
using RedHat's and Mandrake's versions of the kernel.Test builds under
RedHat's kernel 2.4.18-3 and Mendrake's kernel 2.4.18-6mdksmp was
successfully completed. Thanks to all of the testers who reported this
bug. It should be fixed now.
The downside of this hack is that it might cause problems with old CPUs
(plain Pentium and Pentium MMX), as well as with Cyrix and Transmeta CPUs .
