Understanding that free markets are only a first approximation and that is why we need anti-trust laws is beyond perhaps even most economics PhDs.

A little off the main topic, perhaps, but Friedrich Hayek touches on this in the first chapter of his classic "The Road to Serfdom". (Making it really annoying about all those self-styled libertarians moaning about poor old Microsoft during the anti-trust trial.) And Hayek was an economist, not a "political scientist".
