A Linux graphics project that could be a good opportunity for the right developer(s) (NewsForge)

Robin "roblimo" Miller is looking for better video screen-capture software, on NewsForge. "So far the two most likely Linux video screen capture programs I've found are vnc2swf and Xvidcap. The problem with vnc2swf is that it produces only .swf files without sound, so to make narrated videos in MPEG format requires a format conversion step, possibly using transcode, a utility neither I nor several friends have managed to get working correctly. But if we can get transcode working correctly, once we convert our swf videos to MPEG we should theoretically be able to add a soundtrack recorded before we started making our screen capture video or one recorded at the same time -- or record and add a new one after the fact. This would work, but it would lengthen production time considerably."

I've been teaching Linux systems administration classes (occasionally, a couple times a year --- interspersed among actual sysadmin contracts) for a few years.

Recently I've been experimenting with an ad hoc hybrid online approach --- using IRC, screen, e-mail and Wiki software. I've also had my wife working on some animated graphics to illustrate some concepts, such as the process lifecycle (fork(), execve(), wait(), exit(), SIGCHLD). (Explained here).

I would love to have an easy tool to generate SWF's with sound overlays for some of these. Eventually I could generate a full length DVD that would contain the core lecture contents with a KNOPPIX/MoviX engine to run it.

Eventually I'd like to deliver free training materials (roughly LPI centric) that would be analogous to free software itself. Of course work on that project is slow, unsponsored and interspersed among contracts, in-person teaching, and "having a life."

Hmm. Wouldn't it be nicer to have VNC with sound? There are VNC stream
recorders and players. Flash doesn't have any Open Source players (like
RMS likes to remind ;-)).
