Firefox 1.0 preview released

The Firefox 1.0 preview release is now available. The release notes show that a fair number of new features have been added: "live bookmarks" which generate a bookmark folder from an RSS feed, better popup control, incremental find, a "master password" to guard login information, and more.

Well, it's always had the capability to have a master password. I assume from the release notes that there is now a valid UI to access this feature.

Previously, you had to edit your preferences manually, or (in later versions) use the Manage Security Devices pref to set it.

The most relevant question that comes to mind for linux users is

Has firefox gained the ability to email a link yet?

If this simple feature were implemented, firefox would be just about perfect - the absence of same is rather puzzling...

Firefox isn't an e-mail client. So lack of ability to e-mail something doesn't puzzle me in the least.

But actually, it basically has this ability already. If I want to mail a link to someone, I just drag it to the gnome-terminal window where I've got my mail client open editing a new message. Presto!

This isn't that hard to set up.

In gnome-control-panel (yes, even if you use KDE), set the default browser to be firefox and the default email client to be Thunderbird. Then they interoperate nicely.

For full effect, you can set it up so that clicking on a link in Thunderbird opens up a new firefox if required or opens a new tab if not.

Use

http://www.webonaut.com/distfiles/firefox-remote/

Adjust paths suitably. Save as "/usr/bin/mozilla_tab" say, and
set your default browser to be "/usr/bin/mozilla_tab" in gnome-control-panel

Sorted.

I have both firefox and thunderbird installed and the interoperation is strictly one way - thunderbird happily opens a firefox window when clicking on a link in a message, but there is a total disconnect the other way. Firefox as of 0.9.3 has no "send link" in the file menu - only a "send page" menu item which does nothing when clicked. Is there some extension which can enable that? I didn't find it.

Again, I stress that I am using linux - the windows version of firefox may be totally different -

As for the gentleman who suggested that a browser has no need to send links since it's "not an email client", I respectfully submit that the emailing of links from a browser is a very useful and oft-used function. Every other browser has incorprated that very feature for good reason. Asking Aunt Mildred to open up a mutt session in an xterm instead of just clicking on "send link" as she did in internet explorer is just silly.

when I went looking for this a few months ago you had to install an add-on to get this. unfortunantly I don't remember which one (I do remember that it did a TON of stuff I didn't care about though)

You might be thinking of MozEx. This (very small) extension lets you specify helper programs for protocols (like mailto:) that Firefox doesn't handle itself. Works like a charm here.

I'm using 0.9, Linux/Fedora Core 2 and right clicking on a link brings up a "Send link" menu. Using the setup I gave above pops up Thunderbird to mail it.

...thunderbird happily opens a firefox window when clicking on a link in a message...

Does this work now? I'm using 0.7.3 from the Debian pool, and clicking on a link creates a file in /tmp. Unfortunately, it doesn't pull down any images or style sheets, so the end result is a pretty rough approximation of what the page actually looks like.

Maybe this is because I'm using a 1337 build but file->send link in firefox pops up evolution quite happily here, and I'm pretty sure it isn't from a local patch.

Stability & renderbugs

Firefox still crashes far too often (on linux and windows). There are a handful of sites that I have to switch to mozilla or msie to browse reliably. Oh and the slashdot horizontal layout thing - that is so weird.

I'll give this preview a spin - it couldn't be worse than 0.9.3.

It's strange that you are having stability issues. In my experience Firefox is absolutely rock solid. It's even stranger that Mozilla (suite) seems to be more stable for you on those sites, considering that it shares much of the infrastructure with Firefox. What sites are you having problems with?

How to add live bookmark for LWN

Posted Sep 14, 2004 21:42 UTC (Tue) by proski (subscriber, #104) [Link]

Go to http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/, click on the RSS button in the lower right corner, select "Add" to add a bookmark, select "Manage Bookmarks" in the "Bookmarks" menu, use copy and paste to clone the Mozilla bookmark (provided that you want to keep it), select "Properties" for the copy, rename Mozilla to LWN and set feed location to http://lwn.net/headlines/rss

Unfortunately, the "location" will still point to the Mozilla site. It can be fixed by editing bookmarks.html manually. Also, there should be a way to create live bookmarks without having to use copy/paste operations.

A really useful new feature, and one I have been eagerly awaiting, is unprompted NTLM authentication. It is now possible to deploy firefox behind an authenticating proxy server without users being prompted for id/password each time they start up.
