Review of Mozilla's Sunbird Stand-Alone Calendar Application (O'ReillyNet)
O'Reilly's OSDir.com looks at
Sunbird, a stand-alone calendar application from Mozilla. "The
ability to create and maintain different calendars for different purposes
is a nice touch although it does exist in other applications, but it is
easier to move between the different calendars in Sunbird. Keeping
calendars separate can be very useful especially when you don't want to
relay your family calendar to the rest of your work group across the
calendar sharing webDAV server."

Corbet had a presentation at OLS to attend to, before that event, then there was coverage of that event and continuing developments after it. After all that, he's probably taken a bit of a breather (well, as much as he can while still attending to LWN's routine daily and weekly coverage), and probably simply hasn't had /time/ for anything else, recently. <g> That said, I'd expect he's getting back into the grind again, and perhaps we'll see something new on the Grumpy Editor series front in the not-to-distant future, provided there aren't other events more pressing, either in Linux-land, or in meatspace, which does happen to be distracting, once in awhile. <g> Duncan

Everyone should take some days off every once in a while, and I really hope our editor has been recovering his energies. But as we are already in September I just wanted to shake the tree to see what falls :)

There has also been the matter of getting LDD3 ready for tech review.Kids are back, LDD3 essentially done. The Grumpy Editor should be making a return before too long.

Review of Mozilla's Sunbird Stand-Alone Calendar Application (O'ReillyNet) Posted Sep 7, 2004 14:17 UTC (Tue) by philips (guest, #937) [Link] Review is bit weird, and doesn't include comparison to other analogous applications.I have used in past quite much Calendar which was shipped by M$ with WinNT 3.5 - it was for its time probably best. Export and import were weak - what is not surprising in general for M$ products. Now I'm using Apple's iCal, shipped with Mac OS X 10.3 and find it quite useful and well integrated with system tool. It supports import, export and most importantly synchronization with mobile devices. I can only hope that next review of Sunbird will have more content and comparison with applications of the same class. Calendars are integral part of most application suits - but still there are some standalone calendar applications. From review I can only tell that Sunbird at moment doesn't (and will never) compare to Outlook, but more to Mac OS's iCal - all mentioned features are present in iCal.

2) It depends what you want. Chandler is a full PIM rather than just calendaring. I use evolution for mail, but don't use it's calendaring. One of the big reasons is where I work, which still uses (just like his beloved grumpiness) ical. And has a mix of linux and windows on the desktop. I'd treat full PIMs as a separate category.

The formats and locations of this stuff should really all be standardised by freedesktop too.
