One thing I never understood is why POP and IMAP never supporting sending
email, only receiving it. If they had implemented a single protocol to
handle both, which included user authentication, then most people wouldn't
need an open SMTP server at their ISP to send email. This would have allowed
more places to turn off unathenticated SMTP and we wouldn't have as much of
a problem with SPAM from home user's systems (we would at least be able to
track it down to the correct account).
