-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 - --------------------------------------------------------------------- Red Hat Security Advisory Synopsis: Updated mailman packages close DoS vulnerability Advisory ID: RHSA-2004:019-01 Issue date: 2004-02-09 Updated on: 2004-02-09 Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Keywords: mailman denial of service DoS Cross references: Obsoletes: RHSA-2002:181 CVE Names: CAN-2003-0991 - --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Topic: Updated mailman packages that close a DoS vulnerability present in mailman versions prior to version 2.1 are now available. 2. Relevant releases/architectures: Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (Advanced Server) version 2.1 - i386, ia64 Red Hat Linux Advanced Workstation 2.1 - ia64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES version 2.1 - i386 3. Problem description: Mailman is a mailing list manager. Matthew Galgoci of Red Hat discovered a Denial of Service (DoS) vulnerability in versions of Mailman prior to 2.1. An attacker could send a carefully-crafted message causing mailman to crash. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2003-0991 to this issue. Users of Mailman are advised to upgrade to the erratum packages, which include a backported security fix and are not vulnerable to this issue. Red Hat would like to thank Barry Warsaw for providing a patch for this issue. 4. Solution: Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata relevant to your system have been applied. To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run: rpm -Fvh [filenames] where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the desired RPMs. Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network, launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command: up2date This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate RPMs being upgraded on your system. 5.
