To: bugtraq@securityfocus.com announce@lists.caldera.com security-alerts@linuxsecurity.com full-disclosure@lists.netsys.com ______________________________________________________________________________ SCO Security Advisory Subject: Linux: CVS double free vulnerability Advisory number: CSSA-2003-006.0 Issue date: 2003 January 31 Cross reference: ______________________________________________________________________________ 1. Problem Description Double-free vulnerabiity in CVS allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a malformed Directory request. 2. Vulnerable Supported Versions System Package ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OpenLinux 3.1.1 Server prior to cvs-1.11-9.i386.rpm prior to cvs-doc-ps-1.11-9.i386.rpm OpenLinux 3.1.1 Workstation prior to cvs-1.11-9.i386.rpm prior to cvs-doc-ps-1.11-9.i386.rpm OpenLinux 3.1 Server prior to cvs-1.11-9.i386.rpm prior to cvs-doc-ps-1.11-9.i386.rpm OpenLinux 3.1 Workstation prior to cvs-1.11-9.i386.rpm prior to cvs-doc-ps-1.11-9.i386.rpm 3. Solution The proper solution is to install the latest packages. Many customers find it easier to use the Caldera System Updater, called cupdate (or kcupdate under the KDE environment), to update these packages rather than downloading and installing them by hand. 4. SCO Group security update to CVS

Posted Jan 31, 2003 22:47 UTC (Fri) by proski (subscriber, #104) [Link]

Something must be wrong with SCO. They are trying hard to lose all the respect they used to have as Caldera. First they hire lawyers to protect their so-called "intellectual property", and we still don't know how far they are going to go. Then they get an "Open Source Product Excellence Award" for closed-source software (even Microsoft got the award for partly open-source software).

Now they are the last to release security patch for CVS. Perhaps they were too busy with legal stuff.

What kind of message are they trying to send to the community?

What kind of message are they trying to send to the community?

I'm reminded of a Far Side cartoon. There were four little pictures; I don't remember what they were, but three of them were animals with dangerous or pointy bits. I know one was a porcupine; one of the others may have been a cobra in full flared mode, and the other may have been a shark with an open mouth of scary looking teeth. The last was a guy standing, looking goofy, wearing a horsehead innertube around his waste. The caption read something along the lines of "Nature's way of saying Stay Away."

I make no claims about SCO, and let you draw your own conclusions :)

(Obligatory disclaimer to those who think I'm a flaming (in many senses of the word) free software fanatic with no clue about reality: so far what SCO is saying they are doing is fine stuff for the Linux community, maybe there's nothing to worry about, yadda yadda etc.)
