Root shell?

Posted Jul 6, 2005 0:35 UTC (Wed) by Ross (subscriber, #4065) [Link]

How can opening a file lead to opening a shell? They are fundamentally
different things. Does the program have buffer overflows or other unchecked
input problems when reading the user log? Or does it actually execute the
log file? If it's an input validation thing that should be fixed in addition
to dropping priviledges.
