Brief History
Linus Torvalds released the first Linux kernel in 1991.
The first distributions were not seen until around 1993.
Some of them you may have heard of:
- Slackware
- Debian
- Caldera, Red Hat
Some of them you may not:
- SLS, predecessor to Slackware
- Jurix, predecessor to SuSE
Notes:
I haven't found references back to an existing SLS. Jurix, on the other hand, still exists. Its author, Florian de la Roche, is now a primary SuSE developer, but maintains Jurix for experimentation on the bleeding edge
The information here is not exhaustive. Having created this talk, I expect to start receiving feedback from all types of people who know more than I. I expect, therefore, that this talk will tend to get rewritten for each occasion, including new information and feedback.
