The creation of UltraPenguin to support he UltraSparc processors is a good example of that. It existed for a couple of years and supported people that could not get support from existing Sparc distributions. Once this feature was well-deveoloped, it was integrated with the rest of the Sparc support and UltraPenguin disbanded.
