Subject: Announcement 1 - we're still here!
To: axp-list@redhat.com
well, folks, with all the hullabalooo happening at DEC over the past
few weeks, I seem to have fallen off the axp-list and not even noticed!
Sorry 'bout that!
In any case, you may by now have heard of the recent acquisition of
DEC by Compaq. This has been a tumultuous and emotional time for all
concerned. However, the good news is that your faithful friends
here at the company-formerly-known-as-Digital (Jay Estabrook, Joe
Martin, Russ Pavlicek, Maddog, and myself) are still here, we're still
doing what we've been doing, and we will continue to do so for the
forseeable future.
Not surprisingly, Compaq has already started talking about
"restructuring". This is inevitable when two companies merge; their
differing structures, policies, and procedures have to be combined
into a single entity. From where I'm sitting I have no idea how this
is going to play out, though I have a feeling that the Alpha design
team (of which Jay, Joe, and I are members) and Digital UNIX (which
Maddog works for) are likely to remain relatively intact. Still,
there is no telling what the future will bring. Whatever does happen,
I'll be sure to let you know as soon as possible.
By the way - the fact that I am posting this from my ISP account and
not my Digital account has nothing to do with my future prospects
at Digital. Rather, the Alpha design team has recently completed
an office move from one building to another (courtesy of the Intel
deal), and network issues are *still* being ironed out... so I'm using
my ISP account for greater consistency and reliability.
Best regards,
