Subject: Pay attention Sun

Hello Linux people,

Firstly, I can understand why it must seem frustrating to be operating
with a company like Sun Microsystems as a participant in the Linux OS
applications story, but that is a neccesary condition of having a good
solid Java with which to run apps. It is a great pleasure to see the linux
commuunity embrace wholeheartedly the value of having an application
platform that can potentially provide a whole bunch of new capabilities to
linux. But along with that comes some frustration. I guess you all would
be interested to hear that many of our partners find it hard to get timely
responses from Sun, and we do have 117 commercial partners and many
additional academic and research partners.

So speaking personally and not as a representative of Sun Microsystems, I
can legitimately express my disappointment that Linux has not been given
the access it needs to get its work done. To a certain extent, this is one
of the stress points of the java business model, which is the extent to
which having the attention of the world is a heavy responsibility.

I agree that Steve Byrne has done a commendable and in fact heroic job
with the SBB port. One of the things that really kicks ass about the linux
community is that individual heroism exists, and that the living community
of participants remains a human scale endeavor even though it is global in
scope.

As far as the presentation of the collected names and cover letter, these
were printed and presented to Dr. Alan Baratz, the CEO of JavaSoft, and he
expressed his opinion that "this should *just happen*", a matter of fact
assertion of his committment.

In closing, here is some more status on the project here at Sun:

Bill,

Here's the info on John Mitchell, the guy who has volunteered to do the
Linux
port of JDK 1.2:

    John D. Mitchell
    President
    Non, Inc.

Address witheld

I've told him to expect something from us in January. Once the papers are
signed, I will coordinate with other members of the JDK team to see that
he
gets access to the 1.2 beta source distributions.

Thanks,
- Mark

and so, as was claimed in "Jurassic Park", life will find a way. If you
contrast the rate at which other platforms are obtaining ports of the 1.2
JDK, the Linux community is doing an amazing job and I would certainly say
on a schedule that exceed many if not most commercial enterprises. And so
we try, and so we play ball, and so we err.

Thanks for your continued patience,
Miko Matsumura

I realize that about this time last year hopes of having a JDK 1.1
capable java distribution under Linux was something of a fantasy to most
of us. I remember sitting at a table, eating lunch, with a fellow from
Sun who mentioned to me that he was a Linux lover, and was so busy with
his JDK internals releases that he didn't have any time for Linux. Was
that you Steve? Of course, that was almost a year ago.

Since then, our most stable JDK release has been the 1.1.3 SBB Release.
I have tried the others but have been unable to make anything else run.
The SBB release was done by Steve as a freebie for the rest of the Linux
world. Applause is in order. And I think Steve should get recognition
inside Sun for doing such a fine job. Now Steve is probably hard at work
on JDK 1.2 releases. I can only hope, along with the rest of us, that
what he learned porting to Linux has made it into the 1.2 source code,
as he promised sometime last year.

I am impatient to see the 1.1.5 release that you mentioned Steve. And
I'd love to be corrected if any of my assumptions here are false. I'd
also like to put in a further Plea to the seemingly deaf ears of Sun:
Please work out a way for Linux developers to get stable, certified,
Java VM. It is precisely this difficulty that has lead to the confusing
state it is in right now. Many simultaneous ports are happening in Linux
and so many reports of Segmentation faults cannot be good for Java under
Linux.

Whatever happened to Miko? Were there any efforts made to present our
collected names, and written agreement letter to anyone in Sun who
cares? In the long run, I believe economically, the Linux community is
pulling their weight in the Java world. Many of us have real jobs in
corporations that actually license the Java technology, and purchase
many Java products.

It really hurts to have such a stable operating system flawed by an
unstable Java VM. Can we get something rolling again? I'd love to give
any time I can to the cause.

Sincerely, Neal Sanche
